Sunday Afternoon Reading

. Sunday, September 5, 2010

I really enjoyed this essay by Jonny Thakkar, "Why Conservatives Should Read Marx". It could have been called "Why Conservatives and Liberals Should Switch Positions on Most Issues" or "How American Political Ideology Has No Basis in Political Theory". In any case, very good. Contains sentences like "If they want to be consistent, conservatives ought really to be anti-capitalist."

I'd never heard of Thakkar, but Google tells me that he's a doctoral student in UChicago's Social Thought program. Here is another article by Thakkar, on how smoking bans represent something sinister. Here is an article about The Point, the magazine he started with some fellow grad students, including a new anecdote about how they got Zizek to contribute to the first issue.
